Separation Anxiety
Being apart from what you love and know.
This common condition in children would seem to be the most sensible condition to the youngest mind – if they are expected to do something new – away from their parents and the safety and comfort of their home – why would they want to do it?
Who really wants to go to school, to a party, to be on holiday in an unfamiliar setting or even endure a sleep over, if it means being away from the home comforts and the love of one’s mother and father, siblings, grandparents, toys and pets?
Often this emotional attachment can take on such extremes of emotion that they can manifest themselves into illogical fears – fears of being separated from their parents and worrying about their death, having accidents, being kidnapped or being taken seriously ill.
The symptoms can include nightmares. sleep loss and psychosomatic illnesses such as aches and pains, panic, nausea and vomiting and even absolute belligerence when faced with the prospect of being away from their family.
This can have a devastating effect on the family dynamics and organisedsed events and can compromise children’s social and educational development.
The what if factor takes on a massive significance in the young person’s mind often precludes them from enjoy the ordinary, every day pleasure of meeting friends and experimenting with new situations.
